Why Confidence Often Follows Courage

Feeling uncertain can make it tempting to postpone something that matters to you. Even after you have prepared, you may find yourself waiting for confidence to arrive before taking the next step.

Sometimes confidence grows through manageable practice while uncertainty is still present. Watching my son learn to drive gave me a lasting picture of what that can look like.

The First Left Turn

We were sitting at the edge of our neighborhood. My son had practiced in parking lots and on quiet streets. The next step was turning onto a busy road.

“No, Mom. I’m not ready.”

I recognized the hesitation. He had been learning the skills, and the unfamiliar road still felt intimidating. I wanted to protect him from that discomfort, and I also wanted to give him room to use what he had practiced.

I told him that when he was ready, he could take a left.

He did. His hands gripped the steering wheel, and his heart was racing. We drove a few blocks before circling back home.

That short drive gave him an experience to build on. Over the following months, he practiced, made mistakes, learned, and became more comfortable. His confidence developed one drive at a time.

Later, after we had bought his first car, I watched him follow me home from the dealership in his own vehicle. Seeing him in my rearview mirror brought me back to that hesitant moment at the edge of our neighborhood.

The first turn had given him a place to begin.

What I Learned About Beginning Before Feeling Certain

I saw how confidence could develop as my son used what he knew and gained more experience. The uncertainty had been real. So had the preparation he could draw on.

The moment also reminded me how easily we can make a feeling of readiness the condition for beginning. We may have enough information for a small next step and still wish we could feel more certain about it.

A manageable experience can give us something new to learn from. We can notice what worked, make adjustments, and decide what support would help us continue.

When Waiting for Confidence Keeps You Stuck

You might notice this when considering a new role, an honest conversation, or a boundary you have thought carefully about. The hesitation may have something to tell you: perhaps you need more information, a smaller step, or support.

It helps to distinguish those needs from the expectation that you must feel completely unafraid. You can respect the discomfort and still consider whether there is a thoughtful next action available.

In my own life, courage has often meant giving myself permission to try, learn, and adjust while some uncertainty remains.

A Small Practice for Taking the Next Step

Choose one meaningful action you have been considering:

1. Name what you want to move toward. Be specific about the choice or conversation in front of you.

2. Review your preparation. Identify what you already know and what information or support you still need.

3. Choose a manageable step. Begin with an action that fits your current skills and circumstances.

4. Reflect afterwards. Notice what you learned, what went well enough, and what you want to adjust before continuing.

Reflection Questions

Where are you waiting to feel completely confident before beginning?

What have you already learned or practiced that you can draw upon?

What information or support would make the next step more manageable?

What small action could help you learn more than continued waiting?
